OK. I was the “Meeter and Greeter” on Melville all day. I would like to recommend some changes for the next Open Day. At first there was no intention for us to sell extra tickets at Melville, I think the punters were expected to return to the Range Office. After some prodding we were allocated some tickets which I sold very quickly. We then found some more and soon a cash box arrived with a float. I’ve no idea how much was in the float because I had no need to use it. Eventually we had more and more deliveries of tickets which I sold out of and I must have sold nearly £2,000 worth. So next time – plenty of tickets please and a bigger cash box to hold all the many notes. Then several people cut their fingers on the trigger guards of the underlevers – this is an easily foreseeable problem for novices and we needed an First Aid Kit. We had to resort to the basic emergency kits in our cars. Then many of the punters were quite elderly and some quite young ones may have had heart problems. We need defibrillators if someone had a heart attack so far from help. Did we have St. John Ambulance anywhere? Many punters had also come especially for the black powder pistol experience. We had to make thin excuses for its non-availability so please can peace be made with those who run this event for next time? We also ran out of ammo for both .38 Special and .22 and had to send for more supplies. There needs to be enough for the whole day when we start because there was absolutely no let-up in the queues for both disciplines.
Lister, thank you for volunteering to help with the Open Day, I will take each of your comments in turn.
Additional Vouchers for sale, complete with a float were provided right at the start of the day to the CRO on Melville. The CRO was also advised that he could call for a collection of cash or for additional vouchers at any time.
A Coaches briefing was issued to all coaches via the respective Team Leaders. I know that Neil sent out the Briefing, so I guess you didn’t get a chance to read it?
The Coaches Briefing is comprehensive and includes details of how to call for Medical Support, via the NRA radio network. Are you able to advise why this was not done? Was the CRO informed of a need for Medical Assistance?
The NRA does have a defibrilator in case of that need.
I am very concerned that the cuts resulting from firearms were not reported directly to either myself or the Firearms Manager by the Melville CRO.
The lack of Black Powder pistol shooting was explained at the briefing given at Melville Range at the start of the day.
Why did Melville run out of ammo? Again, it was explained in the Coaches Briefing that either Team Leaders or CROs should radio through for additional ammo as soon as supplies started to run low and not after they had run out.
I hope this answers your questions?
Thanks
Guy Larcombe – NRA Open Day Shooting Manager.
Hi Guy
Yes I was at the team briefing which you addressed and you did mention the Black Powder problem. I didn’t feel comfortable telling the punters that there had been a storm in a teacup with the Black Powder folk and they’d had a fit of pique. I really am trying to be helpful here and Neil did supply what sheets of tickets he had. I did read the Briefing several times and I have it in front of me again.
Melville ran very short of ammo and we were able to summon some more just in time. Neil was quite busy on the radio several times during the day ordering up more tickets, rifles and later ammo.
Very happy to volunteer again.
Regards
Lister
