Alan Whittle

Alan Whittle

It is with great regret and sadness that we have to tell  you of the death of  Alan Whittle who passed away on Sunday the 1st July 2012.  Alan was attending the Derby Open meeting when he was taken ill and collapsed.

For many years Alan was a regular at Gallery Rifle shoots throughout the country and was well known and admired by all.

He will be sorely missed by all his friends and shooting colleagues in the community – his death has come has a great shock to us all.  Our thoughts are with Alan’s family at this difficult time. RIP Alan.

The County of Wiltshire Gallery Rifle Open

Count of Wilts Open - 2102

Ash and Chris – Wilts & Open winners 2012

Taking a calendar slot in the season shortly after the Phoenix the Wiltshire open is usually an all day affair with up to 6 competitions being available in previous years. Due to range commitments from the military we had to settle for a Sunday morning outing this time out but still managed to squeeze in 4 events – T&P1, T&P2, Multi Target and a Multi-Target 3.

In the nine years this meeting has run we’ve never been rained on and this year was no exception. Believe it or not as the day progressed the weather got better. We have the photos to prove it.

Congratulations to Ash and Chris , Wilts and Open winners for 2012 (again!) . Full set of results available on the results pages.

See you all next year for the 10th anniversary shoot. Weather always guaranteed!

UK Gallery Rifle Leagues

The UK Gallery Rifle Leagues will commence at the first event after The Derby Open 2012  (The Welsh Open) and will finish at the Derby Open in 2013.

You do not need to do anything to take part except enter the events the league is offering – namely:

The 1500  -|-  Timed and Precision 1  -|-  Multi Target

The events listed above will be available to enter in the following gun types

  • GRSB
  • GRCF Standard
  • LBP
  • LBR

The four highest results throughout the year will be used to determine positions. At the end of the year the league will be split into appropriate classes – X, A, B, C, D as appropriate

Only individual UK scores will be used for the league – therefore no international match scores for 1500 will be considered.

All league results will be updated after every meeting and will be published on this website.

Chris Lewis

Chris Lewis

As the Phoenix meeting came to an end for 2012 we received the sad news of the death of Chris Lewis who passed away peacefully after his ongoing illness.

Chris was a regular shooter on the Gallery Rifle circuit, as was his wife Laura.  He was well known to many of us. He was also a member of the Welsh Gallery Rifle team and competed regularly at Bisley.

He will be greatly missed by all his friends and colleagues in the shooting community. Our thoughts are with Laura and family.

A justgiving page in Chris’ is name has been set up to enable donations to the Marie Curie Charity.

The Phoenix Meeting

The Phoenix Meeting

Phoenix LogoPushed back a week this year to keep the meeting aligned with the traditional end of May bank holiday weekend it was unclear how the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations would affect this annual celebration of the shooting sports.

phoenix-1

Member of the German team shooting the International 1500 match

The organisers need not have worried. Although slightly down on actual physical shooters compared to 2011 the number of competition cards shot was about the same.  The miserable weather would not have helped on the Sunday morning but the worst of the weather was actually reserved for the International 1500 Match on Monday morning. Not only wet but turning pretty cold.

Regardless of actual numbers shooting the Phoenix meeting always feels busy due the trade show which always coincides with this meeting at the Pavilion and brings in lots of visitors in its own right.

Steels & Butt Zero

The Bianchi Ranges and Speed Steels on Stickledown

As far as the shooting went most things ran smoothly – as much as can for a meeting this size. As is always stated – no meeting can run without the enormous amount of time and effort put in by numerous groups of people looking after the ranges, stats and reception – to name but three. We are always looking for volunteers to help run not just the Phoenix but other Gallery Rifle meetings we run at Bisley and elsewhere. Contact us via this web site for details.

Results (and Prizelists) and photos taken throughout the of the course of the meeting [Shooting and Relaxing]will appear elsewhere on the web site. If anyone has anything to contribute, photos, videos, stories or feedback please  send it in.

The next meeting in the Gallery Rifle Calendar is the County of Wiltshire Open held at the Warminster Range complex on the edge of Salisbury Plain.

The next meetings at Bisley are the Imperial meetings of IHAM followed almost immediately by the Imperial P&GR.  As always – volunteers are required for both these events.

Western Winner

The Western Winner

SGCSponsored by the Sportsman’s Gun Centre for 2012 this year’s Western Winner was run 0ver two days  – Friday 18th May to Saturday 19th May.  Even though nobody wanted the free hotel room offered on the Friday evening the two day meeting proved its worth with little slack being available on either day

Plenty of hot-dogs and cakes to keep competitors going through the day.  And thanks to the sponsors plenty of offerings on the prize table.

Results and photos available in the usual places.

The Mattersey Ten

The Mattersey Ten

Mattersey 1500

1500 at Mattersey

Good weather for the day of the meeting in-between what has been pretty much  constant rain for a week or two beforehand (and since).  A welcome change from the weather at Basildon and plenty of familiar faces up at the old quarry as usual.

Results available over on the Results Page.

Some photos of the day here.

The Basildon Open

The Basildon Open

The Basildon Open – over weekend 27th to 29th April.  Plenty of competitions were on offer this year including opportunities to shoot in  Open and Classic events.

The weather was awful – it rained for the best part of 36 hours constantly but we did get some sunshine for the prize-giving

Spring Action Weekend

Spring Action Weekend
