The Spring Action Weekend is fast approaching and being shot over the weekend of the 23-24 March essentially kicks off the Gallery Rifle season. However its closely followed by three shoots throughout April which all offer classified GR&P opportunities and should not be overlooked. These, as well as a steels match, are all listed in the calendar with full details should anybody which to investigate fully.
The Army Target Shooting (ATSC) Club’s annual Club Championships and Open Meeting is back to its usual mid April timeslot for 2013 – 13-14 April. The meeting contains a mixture of ISSF air, Black Powder pistol and Gallery Rifle events so caters for a wide range of shooting over the weekend.
For Gallery Rifle shooters the Army is offering 50m precision, America Match, T&P1 and Multi Target as well as 1500 events for all gun types. Entry forms available to download now. With Easter being early this year this meeting will be fast upon us so advisable to get your entry forms in ASAP. So it at the SAW maybe!
If you fancy a trip to the Borders the Joint Services Pistol Club are holding their first open competition of the year over the 20 and 21 April. For those unfamiliar the Joint Services Pistol Club are based at Colmsliehill Range near Galashiels in the Scottish Borders. Check out the Calendar entry for the location and links to entry forms.
T&P1, Phoenix A and Multi Target on offer for all gun types.
The Basildon Open is tucked away in the early part of the season straddled between the SAW and the Phoenix. Its an easy meeting to bypass. However with a full range of events including The 1500, all the shorts and the Grand – available for all gun types and for Open and Classic shooters it should definitely not be overlooked.
Entry could not be easier this year with the Basildon organisers joining the Internet revolution and on-line methods being offered.

Three days for again 2013. Basildon put on an excellent shoot with plenty of space to camp overnight and a pretty decent BBQ for those who wish to partake – just bring a few drinks! Shops and supermarkets a stones throw down the road and to keep ahead of the Derby set, John even informs us year a shower will be up and running this year.
Date for the April shoot is Sunday the 14th. The usual formula for these matches and available for LBR, LBP, CF underlever rifle and .22 rifle. Check the calendar for full details and location.
Rule changes are all in the GR&P book indicated with the margin bars. There are no major changes and some rules have been clarified more than anything. Summary of the changes are listed here.
Foot fault lines and their use have been clarified. Foot fault lines can be parallel to or perpendicular to the targets – the latter being the case when shooting around a post or barricade. Generally feet can be on but not over a line.
Competitors shoot around a barricade or post. Foot fault lines are back from the the leading edge of the barricade – perpendicular to the target. Use of these foot fault lines is as described above and in the book.
No decoration of targets and target boards with random bits of anything. Targets can and will be identified by numbers and possible colour coding only.
Practice 1 is now 10 shots in 10 minutes (as opposed to 5 shots in 5 minutes shot twice)
Dropped ammunition, magazines or speedloaders may not be picked up.
Tie break rules amended – greatest number of Xs in the event followed by greatest number of 5s, 4s, 3s, 2s… followed by highest bullet score on the left hand target, highest number of Xs on the left hand target.
Dropped ammunition, magazines or speedloaders may not be picked up.
Barricade shooting area foot fault lines clarified in the book.
Course of fire for the Los Alamitos match completely overhauled.
Malfunction allowances removed

Don’t forget to bring your competency certification card as you will be required to produce this before you can shoot. In addition, if you are shooting Shotgun, LBR or LBP you will need to produce your Firearm Certificate.
Please let me know as soon as you can if you are able to help out at the Spring Action Weekend. As well as NRA qualified RCOs we also are very happy to have any other helpers, regardless of experience, to lend a hand. If you have not worked on a range crew before you will learn a lot and contribute to the success of the meeting
There will be a day or two prior to the meeting for ROs to shoot their events. Food and accommodation will be provided as well in line with the number of days you can give us.
Here is the link to the on line RO registration form. Please use it as it makes the process of collecting all the data so much easier.
There are some new rules and event conditions for 2013 so please check the on line copy of the handbook. (Please note: the one at the NRA website currently points to the 2012 edition)
The rules on foot fault lines have been clarified, especially for the Bianchi barricade match.
Some changes including revised gun types. There is also a TSG Rulebook as part of the Bisley Bible now.
A new two person shoot off for .22 rifles and pistols. You’ll find it on Stickledown on the Speed Steels range. Go to Galleryrifle.com for a description.
Please make sure you tell us in advance if you want to use a rifle with a muzzle break or will be using HME ammunition.
Eye protection is mandatory. Shatterproof glasses must be worn which provide adequate protection at the sides as well as the front. If they do not, you must use additional side protection in the form of slip on shields or similar. Slip on side shields will be available at reception with profits going to a charity for visually impaired shooters.
Hope to see you there.

Meeting Director
The Handbook is in the usual format again for 2013. Its gone to press – thank the gods…..
Thanks to all our sponsors and advertisers, contributors, proof readers, checkers and generally interested parties. There is bound to be the odd error or typo. If you find any please let us know via the usual channels.
The handbook is available in the following electronic formats and all being well will be available in hardcopy from the NRA by the time the Spring Action Weekend comes around on the 22-24 March
This is a weekend offering ISSF air pistol, black powder and gallery rifle shooting over the weekend of the 13th and 14th April.
Its a small meeting but could benefit with a few more shooters from the GR community coming along and having a go. Prices are reasonable and the gallery rifle part of the shoot is classified. This year a 1500 is also included in the schedule for the first time.
Entry forms are now available for download. All competitions being held in familiar territory on Melville unless you are partaking in some of the ISSF 10m air pistol stuff which will mean a short trek over to Lord Roberts.
The ATSC Open is well worth a look and its the only shoot I know where high tea is provided before prizegiving at the Army clubhouse. Very civilised all round.
(National Shooting Centre (NSC), Bisley)
Here is something a bit off the beaten track to have a think about. A trial of a Long Range .22rf event to be held at at the end of April at Bisley.
Pertinent details below however full match conditions can be found over at the NRA website as well as the entry forms.
Results of the Multi-Gun match held at Bisley over the 16-17 February can be found on the NRA Web Site
Mike Chinery from Stocade Products showing off the Volquartsen LBP’s at the British Shooting Show 2013.
Good to see everyone at the show. Thanks to everyone who popped by to see Jim, Pete, Les and Neil on the Great Britain Gallery Rifle stand. Between ourselves, The FCSA, UKBR22 and Target Sports magazine we seemed to be busy throughout most of the weekend.
We took a few donations for the GB Team funds, shifted over 250 Gallery Rifle handbooks and hundreds of flyers advertising all competitions and events being hosted over the year.
Next year the show is on at the same venue over the weekend of the 15th/16th February 2014.
Just a reminder that the annual Multi Gun Match takes place on 16th and 17th February.
For those of you who missed last year’s inaugural event this comp gives you a chance to shoot CSR, GR&P and Target Shotgun in a 4 part competition being shot over the whole weekend.
Full details can be found at:
This was a hugely successful event last year and we hope to see you there.
[countdown date=2013/02/09] [dtimer] to the Show [/countdown]
After 4 years up at Newark the The British Shooting and Countryman Show is at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire this year.
For the last couple of years, two or three members of the GB Squad have been running a stand at the show to promote the activities of the teams and the discipline in general.
The stand is kindly donated by the show organisers free of charge. If the format of previous years is to be repeated we’ll be sharing the space with The Fifty Calibre Shooters Association and the guys from Offa’s Dyke Rifle Club, the UKBR22 benchrest guys and Vince Bottomley and co. from the on-line Target Sports magazine.
If you are at the show seek us out. We’ll have a few competition rifles and pistols on show. We’ll have hand books and rulebooks to give out . We’ll have flyers and information for all events happening throughout 2013. We’ll have some videos and slideshows showing the events we take part in. These will give anyone an overall flavour of the discipline, the competitive elements of the sport as well as something of the social side of it all.
We’ll also have a few keyrings & torches, borelights, boresighters & pointers etc – all available with nominal donations to the official Team Overseas Team Fund to help the teams travel and compete.
Feedback on this unanimously in the direction of NOT allowing competitors to adorn their targets with all and sundry. In fact its been pointed out this is just a natural extension of the general principle that competitors should not be interfering or touching their targets in any way at all.
Target numbering systems therefore become much more important. Match Directors probably need to add this to their list of things that just need to be right on the day.
Rule B14.5.2 of the GR&P handbook states: A competitor may place on their target one distinguishing mark with a maximum diameter of 100mm. It may only be placed in the extreme top right or top left corner of the backing board.
Targets should indeed be readily identifiable to the competitor. All should be numbered and all should be identically labelled for consistency and fairness.
As the rule states – A competitor may place on their target one distinguishing mark with a maximum diameter of 100mm. It may only be placed in the extreme top right or top left corner of the backing board.
Cross shooting is a problem – we have all done it….
Something which has been mooted since removing the ability of shooters to clearly mark their target in line with the style immediately above is the apparent return of much more cross shooting. It may be all very well saying that a shooters should be able to identify their target but the lobbying is that this isn’t happening under the current guidelines and ruleset.
The additional issue (perhaps more relevant) that a shooter who’s target has been cross shot onto can take the highest score (or choose what they prefer) makes a mockery of the level at which we are attempting to shooting at. The ‘pick and choose’ your score approach can be seen as ridiculous if the cross shooting problem is really seen as a common and regular problem which needs to be addressed yet again.
The proposal is that any shooter be allowed to attach a coloured card on their target board as long as it is less than 20cm square (double the size of the current allowable mark) and is only attached/stapled to the back of their target frame so it protrudes from the edge of the target. The argument goes that it also puts the marker in the sight line of the shooter therefore hugely reducing the chance of either them shooting someone else’s target or someone else shooting on their target. Coloured cards are easily and instantly recognised by the brain where as numbers take more computing power and need thinking about!
So – Blackpool illuminations or clean and uniform target marking. Which do we want? The former leaves it in the hands of the shooter. The latter with the match organiser. Maybe vested interests at play but when you have forked out your hard earned to attempt to get a score onto the GRID it really does need to be your score (not help from anyone else) and all counted on your target.
