NRA Open Day – Saturday 8th September

Open Day

The NRA will be holding the next Open Day  where visitors will be able to try shotgun, air rifle, fullbore rifle, sporting rifle, gallery rifle, laser clays, precision snap, practical and historical rifles to name but a few, all with one-to-one coaching.

The Gallery rifle elements of the Open day take place on Melville Ranges and concentrate primarily on lever action rifles. GRSB is already well catered for on the Steels layout over on Stickledown ranges where the newly updates Ruger 10/22s are put to good use.

However, traditionally,  GRCF shooting has not been too well catered for. We could do much better in this area to aid in the overall promotion of the discipline.  The main sticking point has been people willing to volunteer for coaching and general running of the bays on Melville on the day.

So if anyone is willing to volunteer a day of their time on Saturday the 8th September to help out it would be appreciated by all and will allow you to put a bit back into the future of the sport and the gallery Rifle discipline. You won’t be out of pocket. A day rate of £55 will be offered to cover out of pocket expenses such as travel etc. If people are travelling long distances overnight accommodation on the Friday/Saturday is also possible.

Contact the NRA directly or via the contact form here

Welsh Open – Results

The Welsh Gallery Rifle Club

Open Championships 2012

The Welsh Open Championships was held at Haverfordwest Shooting club over the weekend of the 11th and 12th August.

The weather was fine and sunny – for most of the time! Good enough for a few of us to camp out, drink a few beers and put the world to rights around the virtual camp fire in the evening.

Results linked below and a call to mark the date in your diaries for next year. We could do with a few more competitors to make it an event to cement into the calendar.  Its a hike for some – thats appreciated.  But plenty of space for camping and the town of Haverfordwest is less than 2 miles away and a joy to visit.  A weekend can be made of it.

This was the initial round of the 1500 and shorts leagues. Initial tables for these to be published soon.

Range Officers at the Nationals

A final call for volunteers.

We are still short of Range Officers for the Gallery Rifle National Championships  next weekend – 25th to 26th August. If anybody can give some time to helping out it will be greatly appreciated.

It is not essential that you are qualified RCO as there are many tasks that need to be carried out on range. Any volunteers are entitled to food and accommodation if required.

Its been said before, but it will always be the case. These meetings simply cannot run without the help and dedication of the volunteer community.  Even volunteering for half a day on one of the ranges helps out enormously.

See you all there.

Target Shotgun Rules

Target Shotgun

The Target Shotgun Discipline Representative, James Harris, has asked for the following clarifications of the rules to be published in the absence of a TSG rule book.

  • Scoring and procedures for the TS events will be in line with the GR&P rule book.
  • When not under the direction of an RO on the firing line shotguns are to be cased or racked. When transporting the gun from the rack to the line it is to be held muzzle DOWN with the action open flag inserted.
  • Muzzle angle restrictions will be as per GR&P rulebook or as directed in briefings.
  • The safety regulations and sanctions will be as per GR&P handbook.
  • Any shotguns that do not comply with the current Bisley Bible para 159 (i.e. .410’s) may be used provided they do not contravene the range regulations however the scores will not be published or recorded this year. N.b Muzzle loading shotguns will not be permitted!
  • Distances for disciplines will be in accordance with previous years, however subject to discussion they may be aligned with the other GR&P events to allow practice on home clubs at future events.

Gallery Rifle and Pistol National Championship Meeting

National Shooting Centre, Bisley 25th and 26th August 2012

The entry form for the Gallery Rifle and Pistol National Championships is now available for download via the link on the front page of the NRA website. The online is also available.

As well as the British Championship titles to be shot for, there is also the premier team match, the Gallery Rifle Home Countries National Match, which will be shot shoulder to shoulder on Melville late on Saturday afternoon.

Don’t forget to bring your Firearm Certificate and your competency certification card as you will be required to produce one or both before you can shoot.

Range Officers

Please let me know as soon as you can if you are able to help out at the Nationals.

As well as NRA qualified RCOs we also are very happy to have any other helpers, regardless of experience, to lend a hand. If you have not worked on a range crew before you will learn a lot and contribute to the success of the meeting

There will be a day or two prior to the meeting for ROs to shoot their events. Food and accommodation will be provided as well in line with the number of days you can give us.

Here is the link to the on line RO registration form. Please use it as it makes the process of collecting all the data much easier.

Eye protection

Eye protection is mandatory. Shatterproof glasses must be worn which provide adequate protection at the sides as well as the front. If they do not, you must use additional side protection in the form of slip on shields or similar.

New for this year

First of all, a new event which has been asked for by competitors – 200m Gallery Rifle. The course of fire is the same as the 200m centre fire rifle events – numbers 6380-6384 – that are in the meetings booklet right at the back. See the GR&P Booklet for the competition information.

The following events have already appeared this year in other meetings but are new to the Nationals.

  • Multi-Target 3 – a more challenging version of Multi-Target with a practice at 50m.
  • The Surrenden – an event for Gallery Rifle Centre Fire which rewards accuracy but penalises you for trying too hard – the longer you take, the more points are deducted.
  • Issued Rifle McQueen on Short Siberia – an issued rifle version using a Desert Tactical Arms Stealth Recon Scout kindle provided by Ewen Campbell of Bench Grade Brands. A level playing field but no real excuses for scores under 50! The ammunition to be used for this event will be available for purchase on the firing point.

Jane’s Wicked Wheel

You’ll see this on the entry form for the first time. It’s a pool shoot on Stickledown with profits going to a charity for visually impaired shooters – B.U.G.S.  It’s quite a small organisation so your input can make a large difference. Your entry entitles you to two runs at the WW and you can buy as many more as you like at reception or on the range. (You must sign the declaration on the entry form and produce you FAC and competency certificate as usual.)

Hope to see you there.

With the royal mail producing 1st class stamps for all gold medal winners now is a great time to stock up on them. Clubs could buy years of stamps, which will only go up in value unlike money in a bank account. Have the pleasure for years to come reminding recipients of the shooting gold medal winner
