The 2017 GB Gallery Rifle Captain

ash-capt-headAsh Dagger has been appointed the Great Britain Gallery Rifle captain for the 2017 season. I’m sure the GR community and squad will wish Ash well and he will continue to build on the success of outgoing captain Jon Avetoomyan, who had a very successful 2016 season, and Pete Cooper who took the team to victory in the IGRF World Cup Finals in November 2015.

Ash started his shooting career concentrating on pistol disciplines in 1985. After transitioning to Gallery Rifle in the late 1990s he has continued to shoot on the competitive circuit both nationally and internationally accumulating many club, county, national and international awards. Ash has been a member of the England, UK and GB Gallery Rifle squads since 2008.

This is not the first time Ash has captained the GB team.  He served as captain for the team’s inaugural season in 2010 and again in 2011 before stepping down to concentrate more on his personal shooting. With the 2017 season being an IGRF world cup year –  the championships being held at Harbour House in Ireland – he will have the opportunity of retaining GB’s status as IGRF world champions.

The South African 2016 Gallery Rifle International Match

SA HuntersA message from Nic Roets from the South African Gallery Rifle Federation and of the SA Hunters Game and Conservation Association.

On behalf of the South African Gallery Rifle Federation and SA Hunt Sport Shooting we would like to thank the IGRF for sanctioning this event.

We would also like to express our gratitude for the assistance with the training and certification of our first qualified international range officers. They have gained valuable experience that would be beneficial to them when we present the 2019 IGRF World Shoot in South Africa.

Please convey our appreciation to Mr Andrew Mercer the CEO of the NRA for his support with our marketing initiative at the 2016 Phoenix Meeting at Bisley.

The meeting was a huge success and we achieved what we set out to do. Both team Australia and Great Britain left South Africa not as competitors, but as sport shooting friends. This friendly invitational match gave them the opportunity to experience the range the climate and the shooting conditions in our country.

We believe this would be of great benefit to them in their preparation for the 2019 World Shoot envisaged to be held at the same venue.

Sincerest appreciation.

The 2016 Trafalgar Meeting

trafalgar imageStill looking for Range Officers if anyone would like to volunteer

The upcoming Trafalgar Meeting is a must in the Classic and Historic calendar, held at Bisley on the weekend of Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October 2016.

This Meeting is full of character, with competitors seen entering into the spirit of the event and some wearing appropriate clothing for the firearms used at the time.

The guns being used attract attention especially when, what is basically a museum piece, can be seen in full operational glory.  This offers the pleasurable opportunity to use, view and handle historical, classic and vintage arms.  Museums and private collectors do preserve our heritage firearms, however practical use by shooters with knowledge of these guns adds another dimension.  These firearms being shot across the ranges is a reminder of the history of their development, from flint muzzle-loader or matchlock, to breech-loading nitro cartridge firearms.

There is also something for the collector at the Arms Fair over the weekend – a good opportunity to search for those hard-to-find pieces of kit as well as to discover new items for a collection.

This year the annual Trafalgar Dinner will once again be held in the historic surroundings of The Canadian Pavilion, with a sumptuous offering of a three course meal with wine followed by coffee or tea, a glass of port and after dinner mints, all for only £16.50. Deadline for appeals Midday Thursday 8th September

A Thank you to all volunteers.

From Reception to the stats team and all the ROs across both days, thank you very much for your hard work, professionalism and cheery nature over the weekend.

We were delighted to see an increase in entries of 13% over last year (195 competitors compared with 172 in 2015) which is really encouraging. Initiatives such as the ‘Introduction to GR’ days help to encourage greater take up of GR&P, and I know many of you are involved in club initiatives too, making a real difference. It’s always good to see new faces on the ranges.

The last major NRA event of the year is the Autumn Action Weekend on 22/23 October. We are working on the entry form now and will publish it in the next 10 days.

Many thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you in October!
